“The Historic Building Expansion Project”
“This project involves the expansion and design of a historic building, originally a Victorian-style residence that has withstood the test of time for over a century, exuding an air of elegance and nobility.”
Situated on a sloped terrain spanning more than three thousand square meters, the original structure occupies the crest of the slope. Originating as a Victorian-style residence, the original structure exudes a dignified charm despite the passage of a century.
Canterbury House involved an expansion of approximately nine hundred square meters across three levels beneath it. Crafting harmonious spatial connectivity between the old and the new on a sloped site posed formidable challenges. Balancing design consistency, material selection, and color harmony between the disparate architectural styles became a paramount consideration, unveiling novel creative predicaments. Our strategy for overcoming these hurdles took us to the realm of copper and rammed earth.

The rustic elegance of rammed earth, bearing the traces of time, finds a symbiotic partner in the fluidity of copper. The unified hue shared by the original red brick walls and the red rammed earth walls creates a seamless transition, a dialogue between venerable tradition and emerging texture. Copper sheeting adorning the exterior evolves with the passage of time, echoing the metamorphosis of fine wine when exposed to air. The exquisite dance between copper and air births an ever-evolving palette of hues, infusing the structure with the enduring imprints of time. This interplay resonates exquisitely with the preexisting heritage edifice, culminating in a tapestry of timeless aesthetics.
